Then I shifted over to him and hugged him. I would never deserve someone like him. Never. I knew that and never would forget it. nothing would ever change that for me. I would never forgive my father for what he had done to me in the past.
He pulled her closer, kissing the top of her head softly and sighed.
Alexa...you know I would never ask you...but something seems wrong," he said quietly "You can trust me...I am here to talk if you need me..ok?"
He kissed the top of her head once more, he had always loved her natural colour and how silky it was. It always had that slight smell of the barn as well.
He would wait. Forever and a day if he had to. He would never push it from her, no matter how much he wanted to know.
I knew that my past would have to be told to him one day. From the day my mother had died, my father had not cared for me as one of his kids. No I was the housewife to him. If he wanted something, I was expected to give it to him, no matter what it was, or he had hit me.
I sighed and then looked at him. "I may as well tell you. It's wrong of me to hide this all from you."
I paused, taking a deep breath. "You know that my mother died and since then I have been looking after my brother and sister. Well it has not been an easy thing to do. The day my mum died, dad forgot I was his daughter, and not my mum. I was forced into that place, what my mum was to him. Only I think he knew i was not her, because if I did not get him or do do something he wanted, no matter how bad, and some of it was bad, he would hurt me."
I sighed. "He even did things that no adult should do to a child." My head lowered as my eyes brimmed with tears.
His free arm clenched with anger towards the man. How could he? To a child!
"Alexa.." he murmered, pulling her closer into him. He had never pushed her to do anything, nothing she had ever not asked for.
He put a finger under her chin, lifting her face to meet his gaze.
"Alexa, you will never see that man again...nor will your brother and sister," he said firmly, whiping away her tears with a gentle touch.
They should report him as well, get him put away for good.
I leaned into him, completely overcome by my own grief for a long while. I knew there was more he ought to know. It took me a while to calm myself down though, before I could tell him.
"Thats not all. He knows that something he said the day i moved out really is coming true as he meant it to. He cursed me once, called me bad luck. And look at us, my brother got kidnapped, I got cancer. Both are bad things. I ignored him at the time when he cursed me, but now, something makes me think that he was right."
He hugged her tightly, knowing she was far from finished. He was here for her now, here for her to trust and love.
With soothing circles he rubbed her back, letting her speak at her own pace.
"Oh Alexa...you are not a curse, nor bad luck. You are the best thing that ever happened to me...and Jacob is safe and sound," he kissed her forehead lightly.
"You are a pray...a wish come true, no curse is bonded to your fair skin," he said gently.
"For what he did...we can take Talila and Jacob away from him...put him in jail if you wish," he said after a long pause.
I smiled at him a little bit. "You can see why he and I do not get along these days. We never have since mum died. I;m not anything to him. though he loves my siblings. Something has to be done about him though. I do not like seeing him living with them. I dont want him to do anything like he did to me, to Talila at all."
I sighed, I was certainly one who never forgot things, just like an elephant.
"Or Jacob," he muttered to himself, running a hand over his face and thinking. With a sigh, he kissed her head once more and stood.
"I am ringing them now...the sooner they are here, well the better," he said, pulling his phone out and ringing Talila.
After he had Talila and Jacob on there way here, they could ring the police and go from there.
Talila answered her phone automatically.
"Hi Kayson, Whats up?"
It was not often that he called her, only when there was trouble. "Has Alexa hurt herself again?" What was the reason behind this phone call? Normally he did not call her that often. She knew that. So why now?
He almost chuckled at the 'again' part, but this was a serious matter.
"No, no...nothing like that..Where are you and Jacob? Can you come over here...now?" he asked, rubbing Alexa's shoulder gently.
He hoped she wasn't at there dad's place, that would just make things more annoying.
"Sure we'll be there soon. Cya." She hung up.
"What are we going to do about my dad?"
I was a little bit worried at the moment. Not about my dad, but about what Kayson was thinking about doing. It was best that my sister and brother came here though. They'd be safer.
He sat down beside her, taking her hand in his.
"Now, we ring the police... you know that you will have to speak and tell them.. maybe in front of your father?" he said gently
I sighed as I listened to what he said. "I know that I might have to." I sighed. That was going to be no easy thing but if it got him off the streets I would find a way to do it. Much as my dad had hurt me, the idea was a little worrisome.
It was never going to be easy for me to do. "You're right, I will have to, though to do so will be hard. It was hard telling you, and I trust you. It will be harder with the cops being the ones."
He smiled at her gently, giving her hand a squease. He was glad she had him, at least someone who partly understood her loving ways.
Dialing on the phone, he smiled at her and spoke.
"Yes police?" he asked.
"Yes, please state your name and problem," said a females voice and the light tapping on the keyboard.
"Yes, I have a complaint... though it is slightly out dated," he said with a sigh.
"Yes, please continue."
"My fiance just told me something about her father..." he continued, filling the officer in on the story.
"Okay.." she said, sounding slightly startled. "I shall send someone over to hear the story in person..."
"Okay," he replied and hanged up sitting next to Alexa.
"There all on there way..." he said quietly.
I nodded. There was no way this was going to be easy. Hopefully I would be able to tell the police before my siblings got here. I did not want them to know what had happened between me and my father. It would not be something for Jacob to hear about and there was no guarantee having him in the next room would make him not hear about this.
"I hope the police get here before my siblings. I do not want Jacob to hear about this. He is too young to know of such things right now. Talila as well."
He nodded, not wanting her to stay here alone while he took Talila and Jacob away so they wouldn't hear.
"You will have to tell them one day... Talila is your age she might understand... though I agree about Jacob," he said sighing and pulling her onto his lap once more.
"See..things will get better," he murmured, kissing gently.
"I know that. But that makes it no easier for me. I don't look forwards to telling them what their father really is. They'll find out one way or another, if this goes to court, which likely it will. I don't want to have to tell that story more than once though. It still freaks me out."
I sighed. "how far away are the cops do you think?"
I hoped not too far at all. There was nothing I wanted more than to have told them. I wanted this to be dealt with as soon as possible."
"Twenty minutes," he guessed, looking at the door as someone knocked from outside. "Or none..."
He stood, tall body leaning slightly as he unlocked and opened the door.
Two cops stood, chatting quietly to each other before looking at James.
"We are here about a report of assult," the older one said and James nodded.
"Yes, my girlfriend....about her father," he said, knowing they might think it was him.
They both nodded, entering the room and seeing Alexa at the table.
"May we?" they asked and James nodded, sitting beside Alexa once more.
I sighed as I heard someone knock on the door and James went to answer it. Then he came back in followed by two cops. I was certainly glad that he chose to sit beside me again, I definitely needed him at the moment. This was not going to be easy for me to deal with. I knew that much now.
"Hi, I'm Alexa." I managed to smile at them both. There was however nothing happy about me at the moment, after all I had just been crying. My throat was dry.
He squeezed her hand gently as they both nodded, sitting across from them. The older one smiled gently, seeming very much the fatherly type while the younger one seemed impatient.
"So... Alexa, please, tell us your story," the older one said and Kayson peered at his name tag. Sergeant Morris it read while the younger ones said Constable Luke, it was clear the was a new one.
Kayson smile gently to Alexa, encouraging her to speak.
I gulped. This was no easy thing for me to say but I knew that I had to tell them.
"A few years back, maybe three, possibly four, my mum died. Well it has not been an easy thing to do. The day my mum died, dad forgot I was his daughter, and not my mum. I was forced into that place, what my mum was to him. Only I think he knew I was not her, because if I did not get him or do do something he wanted, no matter how bad, and some of it was bad, he would hurt me. Sometimes he even did things that would not be right for an adult to do to a minor."
He squeezed her hand gently once more, smiling at her warmly and showing how proud he was of her by that single touch.
"I see," Sergeant Morris said, taking down a few notes "Do you have sisters? Brothers? Anyone else that lives with you and might of had the same thing happen?"
Kayson sighed quietly to himself, glad that Sergeant Morris was taking it seriously.
"Also, when was the first time he... did this to you?" he asked gently. "I am sorry to ask dear, but I have to ask."
I had known they would likely want to know that. "A few months after the day my mum died was the first time. It was not the last. If my memory is correct he did that inappropriate thing about five times. He hit me many a time. I think even for a time he forgot it was his daughter he was hurting and not his dead wife."
I then tackled the other question. "He has never hurt my twin sister, nor my little brother. He is rarely home to look after them so I usually go round there, cook them all dinner then come back home here. I was the only one he ever decided was worth hurting."
Any reason why you?" he asked. "Did you look more like your mother than anyone else...or did you do something he didn't like?"
They were pretty much pointless questions, but the Sergeant needed to know the whole story.
"We also need his details, we have to go question him as well...and this is most likely going to go to court and so you will have to stand in front of a judge and repeat everything you have told us. I suggest you get a lawyer, they will be able to tell you more," he said gruffly.
"I think he chose to do everything to me because I was a lot like my mother. The other two were more like dad more than mum. Also there was the fact that a horse race killed my mum. He never liked horses and wanted her to stop racing. She wouldn't because it was her passion in life."
I stopped realising something. There was something more.. The attacks on me and my mum were related to my dad... I knew the guy.
Sergant Morris's eyebrows rose as if remembering something.
"Oh..Alexa Collins," he said and shook his head and smiled warmly at her "Yes.."
"We shall be in touch...okay?" he said standing and shaking Kayson's hand "Make sure...if anything happens you ring us."
Then they both left though the door, but Kayson jumped to his feet knowing that Alexa wasn't done. She had figured something out.
"Wait, I think there is something else..." he said and the older officer span and looked from the two of them.
Yes?"
Kayson nodded to Alexa, knowing she had some theory. He could tell that much, also that it was a surprise.
"What is it?" he asked her gently.
It took me a moment to figure out how to say this. "I think there's someone else involved. Of late I've been being threatened by another man, one that I can remember as a freind of my father. He started threatening me only a few weeks ago, ever since I took a particular title from him at one of the equestrian shows. he must realise that I am the daughter of the woman that his jockey killed those few years ago."
I paused. "I think my father wants him to stop me from competing where I am best, because he does not like horses anymore. He never did really. This same man has made me have a lot of fear of late. he kidnapped my brother in an attempt to kill me. Not to mention he damaged something of mine beyond repair that I inhertied from my mum."
"I also found a bear cub in my room," he offered and the officers nodded as one.
"Thank you...is there anything else?" Sergant Morris asked, removing his hat to wipe off the sweat which was resting there. He was a big man, large hands, rounded stomach the whole lot. But he had a kind face and caring tone.
"A name maybe?" he asked, replacing the hat once more.
I thought for a moment. "Jereme Peterson was my dad's freind. I know they still are freinds. he used to come around a lot and laugh with dad at how bad a house keeper I was. Not that I really was, I know how to look after others. They did not see me that way though at any time."
I sighed.
"Sometimes when he went home, dad used to yell at me for being stupid and thigns while there were guests in the house. He was always worse when Jereme went home afterwards."
I looked at the ground. "At the moment though I've called my sister and told her and my brother to come here and stay with us. I dont want them near dad."
The head bowed, thinking quickly.
"Good, I would keep your brother and sister here..for now...are you able to house them?" he asked, pulling the wooden chair back and sitting once more. "Have you got the room?" he asked, peering around the small unit.
Kayson nodded quickly "Yes, we just bought a house down Country Road," he said and the officer nodded. Anyone who could afford those houses could look after two kids.
"Good good, well we must go..but please don't feel bad to ring us. We are here to help," he said, standing once more.
This time I managed to smile. "Just doing what we think is right really. I managed to ignore him for a while but now it just became too much to hide from someone I care about." I sighed. No one knew the real extend of the damage he'd done.
"Thank you for coming and hearing me out." My mind turned then to little Lily, the baby I'd had once. I'd had to give her away but the family that was looking after her said they would give her back to me if I asked them.
"It was our pleasure," the officer said and left, the younger cop trailing behind.
Kayson turned to Alexa once they were gone, pulling her onto his lap and held her tightly.
He pulled her closer, kissing the top of her head softly and sighed.
Alexa...you know I would never ask you...but something seems wrong," he said quietly "You can trust me...I am here to talk if you need me..ok?"
