Brian stood in the court room, looking around at the crowded seats.
People looked at him with mixed expressions. Some, he knew, all ready judged him to be guilty.
The people leaned forward in their seats. Their hairs on the back of their necks rose in suspence at his answer.
"I will ask you again, Mr Jay. Why did you kill that woman?"
Everyone's eyes fixed on him, ready to fall off their benches.
"I all ready told you," Brian persisted, "I didn't kill no one! Why won't anyone believe me?"
"No one believes you because you really did commit the crime. Only you are the one who has to admit what you've done. The bloody jacket was found in your locker- how else did it get there?"
Brain swallowed hard, this was a complete nightmare.
"I didn't do it. I swear to you all, I didn't kill her! I was framed!"
He looked out at the windows. The glass couldn't be opened. The fog was becoming too thick, and no one could be outside without an oxygen tank and a mask. Those who tried before suffocated, and died within minutes. After that- few people had the courage to check the toxic air.
The judge sighed, this was going no where.
"All right. Is there anyone else who has any evidence to offer?"
The crowd shook their heads, murmering that they hadn't.
"Then I am forced to clear this man of all charges. Brian is hereby released from custody."
The audience jumped to their feet, shouting their objections to the verdict. "Just give us another couple of days, please your honour."
The judge shook his head firmly.
"I'm sorry, but I've made my decision. You've asked me to post pone the hearing several times all ready this month. That should have been long enough. I suggest you go about your jobs and find the real killer- and have more than one peice of evidence to bring to the court room in future."
Without another word, the Judge left the room.
Everyone glared at Brian, watching as the handcuffs were released from his bonded wrists.
"I'll be watching you," the officers growled.
Brian nodded, smiling at them.
"I didn't kill that woman. Watch me all you like, I have nothing to hide."
Brian put on his coat and was lead out the front door. He put on his mask and switched on his oxygen tank and stepped out on to the street a free man.
